South to Antarctica
Sunset over southern Argentina last night.
And now south into the Drake Passage, Gerlache Strait and Elephant Island. The short night was accompanied by a percussion symphony as the bow would lift, then bang the ocean surface while unfamiliar creaking noises came from all the room's surfaces all while the wind roared and howled on the balcony.
Spray from the swells washes over the entirety of the helipad. The captain yesterday said his cabin near the bridge is the worst spot aboard for feeling the movement and the Centrum (where we're situated) is the best. He said when he first started at age 16 on a fishing vessel in the Arctic, he was seasick for 6 months, but not since. We've not had an issue yet, but today may be worse entering the Drake Passage. There are some patches of blue visible mixed with the low gray-white clouds and the gray-green swells and hints of the sun. Each swell presses us down, then gives us a moment of weightlessness. Should be a memorable day!
